An alarm, an interlock, and a trip are not interchangeable solutions. The right choice depends on consequence, available response time, operator capability, independence, and what must happen when the initiating signal fails.
Start with the consequence
If the operator has enough time to diagnose and respond safely, an alarm may be appropriate. If a specific sequence must be prevented during normal operation, an interlock may be the better tool. If the consequence develops too quickly or is too severe to rely on manual action, an automatic trip may be necessary.
